5 Benefits of sensory play in early years

There are so many layers of development when it comes to a child’s development. In addition to cognitive learning (ABC’s, math, etc), sensory development is also a crucial aspect of child development. Sensory development is accomplished through sensory play. At Wimbledon Day Nursery, we incorporate sensory play into our pre-school curriculum to help students develop on all levels.

Sensory play for children is all about hands-on activities that stimulate their senses: taste, sound, smell, touch, and sight; as well as balance and body awareness.

Keep reading to learn about the Top 5 Benefits of Sensory Play in Childcare at Nursery Schools in Wimbledon.

The Top 5 Benefits of Sensory Play in Early Childhood

1. Cognition

The acts of trying new experiences, observing, and manipulating new materials all work together to expand the thought processes of children and are some of the benefits of sensory play in the early years. Through these cognitive sensory play experiences, they will learn pre-math skills, such as matching, size comparison, and the ability to sort patterns while attending Day Care in Wimbledon.

2. Awareness

Taking part in sensory activities helps kids become more aware of the space that physically surrounds them (and their position in that space) and also more aware of themselves as individuals, separate from their playmates, siblings, and parents.

3. Language Development

While kids take part in sensory play together, they practice communicating verbally in these group situations. They must speak to communicate their opinion, wishes, and ideas to their fellow students. The strong language skills they develop during these sensory activities also lay a solid foundation for learning to read.

4. Motor Skills

Children are constantly moving and touching things, so while they are turning, pouring, and pinching, they develop the small muscles in their fingers and hands.  And on the flip side, as children crawl, climb, run, jump, and kick when playing with things like balls and playground equipment, they develop the large muscles in their feet, legs, arms, and torsos.

5. Problem Solving and Creativity

When children interact with a wide assortment of materials and open-ended activities, they can make predictions, solve problems, and make decisions. An open-ended project where the process is more important than the end product allows children to use their imaginations and feel good about the outcomes.

Of course, you want to choose the best Preschool in Wimbledon for your child. That’s a given. So, look no further than Wimbledon Day Nursery.
