5 Simple Tips for Kids on How to Improve Handwriting

Even though the younger generation rarely handwrites for communication anymore in this digital age, good handwriting skills are still very important for memory sharpening and learning. At our Preschool in Wimbledon, we understand that children’s brains process information faster when it’s written down.

If your child has poor handwriting skills, it’s important that they practice regularly. For the best results, handwriting practice must be fun so it doesn’t become boring.
Here are 5 helpful tips on how to improve your kids’ handwriting. Try these recommendations and you’ll start seeing improvements in your child’s handwriting in no time!

5 Simple Writing Activities to Improve Handwriting

1. Writing Outside the Box

Think outside of the box to make practicing handwriting fun! A bowl of any colour, foggy mirror, or a sandy beach make great practice surfaces. Whether your child’s practicing with a pencil, a stick, or his fingers, using creativity can spark interest in writing.

2. Be Prepared with the Right Tools

If your child’s struggling with a standard pencil, give him a shorter or smaller, kid-sized pencil. At our Nursery School in Wimbledon, we always make sure that each child has the right tools to make handwriting easy.

3. Identify the Problem

The most common handwriting problems for children are in four main areas: line-alignment, spacing between words, letter size, and letter formation. Focus your child’s handwriting practice on the concepts or letters they are struggling with. Children attending Playschool in Wimbledon get lots of individual help from teachers to help them perfect their writing skills.

4. Encourage Activities That Use Fine-Motor Skills

The more activities children do to improve fine-motor skills, the easier it will be to learn how to write well. Properly holding a pencil, dexterity, and coordination can all be improved when your child gets extra practice manipulating objects such as doing puzzles or using silverware.

5. Make Writing Fun

One of the best ways to improve kids’ handwriting is to make it fun. Give your child a fun pencil or a rainbow of coloured ones so they will be inspired to practice writing. Try simple games such as hangman, word puzzles, and anagrams, or create lists focused on a theme (such as colours or animals) to give purpose to writing practice.

At Wimbledon Day Nursery, we make it a priority for our students to practice handwriting regularly to improve their writing skills. Visit us in person to learn more about our preschool and Day Care in Wimbledon.
